Kenya announces national elections in 2013

Kenyan officials have set the next major election for 2013, the first poll since postelection violence rocked this East African country and killed more than 1,000 people.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Isaac Hassan said Saturday that they decided to announce the vote will be held March 4, 2013, to "remove the uncertainty, anxiety and suspense surrounding this date."

Confusion surrounded the date for the presidential, national and local polls after Kenyan leaders gave different interpretations of a new constitution on when it should be held. A court in January said the two key leaders of Kenya's coalition government can decide the date or failing that, hold it in March 2013.
