A military spokesman says two soldiers have been killed by separatist rebels in Senegal's restive south.
Ziguinchor's chief warrant officer Mamadou Sall says four soldiers were also wounded in the clashes on Sunday. He says the fighting follows an attack on a Senegalese army patrol.
The attack comes as President Abdoulaye Wade is to visit the region Monday to campaign ahead of Senegal's March 25 presidential runoff vote.
The Movement of the Democratic Forces of Casamance has waged a low-level insurgency against Senegal's government since the early 1980s. The last several months have seen an increase in attacks after years of relative calm.
The Casamance region is separated from the rest of Senegal by the nation of Gambia.
