A Kenyan official says a police reservist has been shot dead by masked men suspected to be members of an al-Qaida-linked group from neighboring Somalia.
Mandera District Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo said Tuesday three gunmen attacked the police reservist near a shop at this Kenya-Somalia border town.
Leparmorijo says an irate mob of people who witnessed the shooting pursued and killed one of the gunmen.
He says one of the two surviving gunmen, who managed to flee, hurled a grenade at a mob pursuing them and wounded eight people.
Tuesday's attack fits into a pattern of over 30 killings suspected to have been perpetrated by al-Shabab militants since October when the Kenyan army moved into Somalia to pursue them over cross-border attacks.
