The governor of a northern state where 44 inmates were massacred last week inside a prison has fired the state's public safety secretary.
Nuevo Leon Gov. Rodrigo Medina says Gen. Jaime Castaneda has been replaced by Gen. Javier del Real, who was deputy secretary.
Medina also said Friday that federal agents will help patrol around state prisons and aid with prison searches and raids whenever necessary.
Last week, 44 prisoners who belonged to the Gulf drug cartel were bludgeoned and stabbed to death by inmates from the rival Zetas cartel inside the Apodaca state prison. Authorities said the inmates were killed amid an escape by 30 members of the Zetas cartel.
