Gunmen attack Philippine city jail, 1 dead

A Philippine police official says suspected Muslim rebels have attacked a jail in a southern city to free a comrade but were repulsed by authorities.

Police Senior Supt. Chino Mamburam says the gunmen fired two grenades at the Kidapawan city jail and then engaged policemen and guards in a brief firefight late Sunday before withdrawing. At least one civilian was killed in the crossfire.

Mamburam says guards bolstered security at the jail before the attack after being warned by police, who received intelligence reports that Muslim rebels were planning an assault to rescue a jailed comrade.

Mamburam says policemen are pursuing an unspecified number of attackers, who fled toward a mountainous area.
