Media rights group tells Egypt to free journalist

The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on Egyptian authorities to release a detained Australian journalist, his translator and an American student who was traveling with them.

Egyptian security forces arrested Austin Mackell, translator Aliya Alwi, and student Derek Ludovici on Saturday in the Nile Delta city of Mahalla al-Kobra. The three have been accused of trying to bribe people to join a strike aimed at pressuring Egypt's military rulers to give up power.

CPJ deputy director Robert Mahoney said in a statement Monday that the arrests "are part of a disturbing pattern of attacks and harassment of media" in Egypt. He called on authorities "to stop trying to prevent news coverage by rounding up reporters on patently trumped up charges."
