Israel's military chief says Iran could have nuclear capability within a year, but sanctions are effective.
Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz said Wednesday that international sanctions against the Iranian regime are "starting to show progress" and should be continued. He warned Iran could cross the nuclear threshold within a year.
Israel has repeatedly claimed that Iran is working on developing a nuclear weapon, a charge Iran denies.
Gantz said at the annual Herzliya Conference on security that Israel must maintain a credible military ability to act in case it is required.
The EU recently imposed a tough series of sanctions against Iran.
Israeli leaders have hinted that the country has not ruled out a military strike on Iran if diplomatic pressure is unsuccessful.
