UK lawmaker proposes ban on keeping monkey pets

Monkeys can't address Parliament. But on Wednesday one British lawmaker did so on their behalf.

Conservative parliamentarian Sheryll Murray is working to impose a ban on keeping monkeys as pets, saying that the primates are too often improperly cared for or mistreated.

She told a small but supportive group of colleagues that she was speaking "on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. I'm referring to non-human primates, most commonly referred to as monkeys."

Murray said that monkeys suffer by being kept as household pets and outlined a series of horror stories, including monkeys who'd been fed coffee, tobacco, and marijuana.

She said that other countries _ including Mexico, Israel, India, and the Netherlands _ have already imposed similar bans.
