Sudan president praises killing of Darfur rebel

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir says the killing of a main Darfur rebel leader is "divine retribution" for his crimes against Sudan.

Al-Bashir's remarks come after the group, The Justice and Equality Movement, said its leader, Khalil Ibrahim, was killed in an aerial attack early Friday. The Sudanese army says Ibrahim died Saturday.

His movement, JEM, is the most effective armed force in Darfur, the western region of Sudan torn by conflict since 2003.

Al-Bashir was quoted Wednesday by Sudan's state news agency as saying Ibrahim's death marks the end of a bitter chapter.

He said the rebel leader's death is "divine retribution for the crimes he committed against his homeland and his people."

The president himself is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in Darfur.
