Bahrain to reinstate 180 dismissed civil servants

Bahrain's official news agency says 180 civil servants, dismissed from their posts during months of protests and crackdowns in the Gulf kingdom will get their jobs back by Jan. 1.

That's just a small part of the fired workers.

More than 1,600 suspected opposition supporters have been pushed out of public and private sector jobs since March, when Bahrain's Sunni rulers started cracking down on protests by the Shiite majority, campaigning for more rights.

The Bahrain News Agency said Tuesday the king issued a decree ordering government agencies to reinstate 180 government employees who were fired on suspicion of participating in opposition rallies.

Bahraini labor groups claim up to 2,500 people were purged from jobs during the unrest. The government puts the number at 1,623.
