Lebanese troops have found the body of an American man who had been missing for three days in a remote mountainous area of the country, security officials said Tuesday.
The officials say the cause of John Redwine's death was not immediately clear but he apparently died while hiking in the central mountain region of Sannine. They would not comment on whether foul play was a possibility until an autopsy was completed.
The officials say troops had to use helicopters to reach the area where Redwine's body was found on Tuesday.
The officials say Redwine was employed in Lebanon with a company that does work for the U.N. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.
In Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland confirmed Redwine's death. "The Lebanese government is investigating," she said. "We would refer you to them for information about the investigation."
