A Turkish news agency is reporting that security forces may have killed as many as 20 Kurdish separatist rebels in the country's southeast.
The Dogan news agency quotes Gov. Mustafa Toprak of Diyarbakir province as saying Monday that security forces staged a major operation, backed by air-power, near the town of Dicle.
Toprak said authorities were still assessing losses incurred by the rebels but that between 15 and 20 rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, may have died.
A pro-PKK website confirmed the operation but did not report any deaths.
The PKK took up arms for autonomy in 1984. Tens of thousands of people have died in the conflict since then.
