Slovaks hold 7 suspected of radioactive sale plan

Slovak police say they have arrested seven men suspected of planning to sell an unspecified radioactive material.

Police chief Jaroslav Spisiak says the material originated in a former Soviet country, has an estimated value of euro500,000 ($649,650) and has not been yet transported to Slovakia.

Six suspects are Slovak nationals and one is a Czech. Slovak and Czech police, who have followed the group since 2009, cooperated in the arrests.

Spisiak declined Thursday to give more details, including what the material was and who may want to buy it. The suspects face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of illegal trade with radioactive materials.

In 2007, police arrested three people who tried to sell uranium for $1 million in the last similar case in Slovakia.
