A Jordanian official says Syria's rebel forces are "not active" inside the kingdom or along Jordan's northern border with Syria.
The remarks are meant to counter a statement from the Free Syrian Army saying Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey are "fertile grounds" for cross-border attacks on Syrian President Bashar Assad's troops.
Information Minister Rakan Majali said Wednesday Jordan is sheltering 620 Syrian refugees who fled the crackdown on the uprising against Assad's regime.
He wouldn't say whether military defectors are among Syrians here. Jordan's government said recently 100 Syrian conscripts _ not officers _ were in the kingdom.
Jordan's king has urged Assad to step down but public criticism of Syria has eased because of crucial $800 million annual trade exchange.
