Group: Kenya must act on postelection violence

A report from an international rights group says that Kenya's police and judicial system have failed to adequately investigate and prosecute crimes connected to the country's 2007-08 postelection violence.

Human Rights Watch said Friday that Kenya should establish a judicial mechanism to review the crimes and compensate victims, especially the 21 people shot by police who have won civil lawsuits but whom the government has not paid court-ordered compensation.

More than 1,000 people were killed in postelection violence after President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner.

The group said police killed more than 400 people during the violence but that police officers have been unwilling to investigate their colleagues.
