More than 550 Ivorian refugees to repatriate

More than 550 Ivory Coast refugees who have been residing in Liberia are being processed at this border town for repatriation across the border into their homeland.

The 555 refugees, some who have lived in Liberia for more than a year, were brought to the U.N. refugee center Tuesday. Some 22 buses from Ivory Coast were to start taking them home Wednesday, but the U.N. said Ivorian border authorities are not allowing them to cross yet because of improper travel documentation.

Maurice Bisau, a senior supplies officer for the U.N. refugee agency in Liberia, said documentation was being looked over and the repatriation should start tomorrow.

Many Ivory Coast residents fled across the border to countries including Liberia during a monthslong political crisis that left thousands dead following presidential elections in November 2010.
