Health fund urges donors not to abandon patients

A financially troubled health fund is warning that millions will suffer if donors do not provide the money needed to help more patients.

The executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria says although donors are under severe financial pressure, "now is not the time to abandon millions of people who are still in need."

Michel Kazatchkine said Wednesday that "the poor and the vulnerable must not be made to pay the price."

The fund has disbursed $15 billion since 2002.

Fund official Christoph Benn told reporters in Geneva that U.S. and European budget problems have hurt it, but that there also has been donor backlash over its losses to corruption and other misspending.
