Airline opens 34 new routes from Nordic region

Fast-expanding budget airline Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA says it is launching 34 new routes from the Nordic countries to destinations in Europe starting in March 2012.

The new routes announced Tuesday include flights from Oslo to Bratislava, Kiev, Reykjavik and Skiathos; from Copenhagen to Belgrade, Marseille and Milan; and from Stockholm to Amsterdam and Krakow.

Norwegian has become tri-nation carrier Scandinavian Airlines' biggest competitor in the Nordic region.

Norwegian flew 4.6 million passengers in the third quarter, up 21 percent from a year earlier. Its fleet has grown from 14 aircraft in 2005 to more than 50 last year. Norwegian also has ordered six Boeing 787 Dreamliners for a planned long-haul operation.
