Merkel welcomes Danish scrapping of border checks

Germany's chancellor is welcoming the new Danish government's decision to scrap renewed customs checks at the two countries' border.

Denmark's previous government decided earlier this year to reinstate customs checks at the borders with Germany and Sweden. The move angered Berlin, though Denmark deployed only 50 new customs officers on its borders when the checks started in July and didn't rebuild border facilities.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt's government took office last month and scrapped the plan.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said after meeting Thorning-Schmidt Thursday that Germany is "very grateful" and that "we can now once again have free movement of people between our countries."
