China 'highly concerned' about crisis in Syria

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman says Beijing is highly concerned about the situation in Syria and has urged an end to the violence there.

Liu Weimin's comments come a day after the Arab League confirmed its suspension of Syria and gave Bashar Assad's government three days to halt the violence against civilians and accept an observer mission or face economic sanctions.

In early October, China and Russia vetoed a European-backed U.N. Security Council resolution that threatened sanctions against Syria if it didn't immediately halt its military crackdown against civilians.

Liu said Thursday that any possible Security Council action regarding Syria would have to help ease tensions and solve the crisis through political means.
