Voter registration for Egyptians living abroad has opened online, a step toward allowing them to cast ballots for the first time in their country's upcoming parliamentary elections.
The government says Egyptians who have national identity cards will be able to cast their ballots at embassies and consulates.
There are still uncertainties about the logistics.
A Foreign Ministry official says a body overseeing the elections has not yet decided who will count and monitor the vote abroad. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.
Online voter registration began Thursday and lasts for nine more days.
The landmark parliamentary elections, slated to begin in just under three weeks, are the first since the uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak in February.
