Man accused of war crimes to run in Congo election

An international human rights group is calling on the Congolese government to arrest a militia leader accused of war crimes who is now running for parliament.

U.N. investigators have said that Ntabo Ntaberi Sheka was aware of horrific mass rapes committed by Mai Mai fighters in 2010. Congolese prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for Sheka on crimes against humanity.

Sheka initially denied his fighters were involved but later handed over one of his commanders to authorities.

Human Rights Watch said Wednesday that authorities should be arresting Sheka, who is campaigning ahead of the Nov. 28 poll. The group notes parliamentarians are granted immunity from prosecution unless that is lifted by a special committee.
