Authorities say gunmen have killed five members of a family in a mountainous area of western Mexico.
Sinaloa state prosecutors say three women, a teenage girl and a 7-year-old boy were killed when gunmen ambushed them as they were riding in a pickup truck on a dirt road in the town of El Rosario.
Prosecutors said in a statement Thursday that police found 64 spent bullet casings at the scene. They said they had not captured any suspects or discovered a motive for the attack, which took place Wednesday.
The western state of Sinaloa is the cradle for most of Mexico's drug lords and its mountains are known to be used for growing marijuana.
