Bangladesh activist receives Qatar education prize

The founder of an anti-poverty group in Bangladesh has received the $500,000 education prize awarded by Qatar's emir.

Wednesday's statement from the organizers says Fazle Hasan Abed was selected for the work of his nearly 40-year-old group, known as BRAC, which began in Bangladesh to train people in job skills.

It has since spread to 10 countries in Asia, Africa and Central America with programs aimed at setting up small businesses or careers as health workers or teachers. The group also provides schooling for children not reached by traditional education systems.

Qatar's emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, presented the prize on Tuesday at the opening of a three-day education conference in Doha.
