China to discuss financial woes in Russia

Premier Wen Jiabao will discuss the global economic crisis when he meets his counterparts in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization next week.

Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping told a news conference Tuesday that Wen and the other prime ministers of the six member countries would issue a statement on the world financial problems at the meeting Nov. 7 in St. Petersburg.

He said the group, which includes Russia and the oil-rich Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, would discuss greater economic integration.

The SCO was created in 2001 to address religious extremism and border security in Central Asia, but it has grown into a bloc aimed at defying U.S. interests in the region.
