The German government plans to shut down 31 military facilities across the country as part of a drive to make the Bundeswehr more effective and professional.
News agency dapd reported that Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere announced the figure after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. He says another 33 facilities will be slimmed down to fewer than 15 people.
The German military currently has nearly 400 facilities.
Germany is moving to shrink the overall size of the military while also increasing the number of soldiers it can deploy in places such as Afghanistan and Kosovo. The country ended conscription earlier this year.
