US special envoy quiet on results of Myanmar visit

The United States' special envoy to Myanmar has ended a visit without revealing details of meetings with officials and democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Ambassador Derek Mitchell departed Tuesday without coverage by the state-controlled media of his visit, despite speculation it involved talks about possible U.S. responses to reform by Myanmar's new government.

Mitchell said last week after Myanmar released about 200 political prisoners that Washington sees encouraging signs of openness in the country, which was under direct military rule for decades until this year.

President Thein Sein took power in March and has initiated liberalizing measures that could lead to U.S. and Western nations lifting political and economic sanctions.
