Obama, Tantawi agree need for free Egyptian elections

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama spoke on Monday with Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of Egypt's Higher Military Council, to underscore full support for Egypt's transition to democracy, the White House said.

"The two leaders agreed that Egypt's upcoming elections must be free and fair and be held in accordance with democratic standards," the White House said in a statement.
