Puerto Rico's education secretary says threats and a suspicious fire at his home have prompted him to resign.
Jesus Rivera Sanchez says the fire in the southern town of Coamo forced him to flee for safety with his wife and three children. He says he's been targeted by break-ins and threats since he took the Cabinet post five months ago.
Gov. Luis Fortuno has thanked Rivera for his service and says the fire will be investigated.
Teachers union President Rafael Feleciano on Monday accused Sanchez of starting the fire himself and called for an investigation.
Rivera had clashed with unions and was under investigation for allegedly tampering with his electricity meter.
