Puerto Rico governor to lead nonpartisan council

Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno has been named the next president of the Council of State Governments.

The nonpartisan council is made up of top officials of all the U.S. states and territories representing the legislative, judicial and executive branches.

A statement from Fortuno's office Saturday says the Republican governor will take office Jan. 1 and also will lead the council's Intergovernmental Affairs Commission.

Fortuno spoke during a council meeting Saturday in Bellevue, Washington about the importance of increased cooperation between Puerto Rico and the U.S. federal government and the need to bolster resources to fight an increase in drug trafficking.
