A Kenyan police official says two British men have been arrested on suspicion of trying to join Somali Islamist insurgents.
The police chief in charge of criminal investigations in Mombasa says the two were detained on the island resort of Lamu and were planning to go to Somalia. Ambrose Munyasia said Tuesday the two are in the custody of anti-terrorism police who transferred them Nairobi for further questioning. It was unclear when they were detained.
On Monday the South Wales Police force said it is in touch with Kenyan authorities to try to establish why the pair were held. The pair are believed to be from Cardiff.
Kenyan police and government spokesmen and the British embassy did not return calls seeking comment.
