Putin hints Medvedev PM job depends on vote outcome

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin suggested on Monday that his plan to appoint Dmitry Medvedev as prime minister following his own return to the Kremlin next year will depend on the ruling party's performance in a December 4 parliamentary election.

If Medvedev leads the United Russia party to victory in the parliamentary election, "Building on this victory, relying on this parliament, Medvedev will be able to form the new government," Putin said in a televised interview.

Putin and Medvedev, who is now president, revealed plans last month to switch roles in 2012, with Putin running in a March presidential election and making Medvedev his prime minister.
