Tracheotomy for Ladies in White founder in Cuba

The daughter of the hospitalized founder of the Cuban dissident group known as the Ladies in White says her mother has received a tracheotomy to help her breathe.

Laura Labrada tells The Associated Press that 63-year-old Laura Pollan is still in intensive care after a week in the hospital and the family is "very concerned."

Pollan was hospitalized Oct. 7 for acute respiratory problems. Her daughter says the tracheotomy was performed Friday.

Pollan and other wives of jailed dissidents started the Ladies in White in 2003 to demand freedom for their husbands. The group's members are known for marching in Havana while wearing white and holding gladiolas. They continue to demonstrate although the last of the 2003 dissidents has been freed.
