Qantas reduces Australian domestic flights

Qantas Airways will ground five airliners and reduce Australian domestic flights in a bid to cope with industrial action by maintenance mechanics.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce told reporters Thursday that a Boeing 767 jet and four 737s will be grounded for at least a month starting Monday and almost 100 flights a week will be canceled to accommodate overtime bans and other industrial action by maintenance crews.

The airline has been beset for weeks by strike action by unions representing aircraft mechanics, pilots, baggage handlers and caterers over concerns that Australia's flagship carrier plans to move jobs offshore.
