UN, AU: 3 peacekeepers killed in Sudan attack

The U.N. and African Union say attackers have killed three peacekeepers and wounded six others guarding a camp for people displaced by fighting in Sudan.

They did not identify the assailants. They said in a statement Tuesday that the peacekeepers from UNAMID, the joint U.N.-African Union force, were patrolling near the Zam Zam displaced persons camp in North Darfur when they were attacked. Along with the peace force casualties, the statement said, one assailant was killed.

The statement said the attack took place late Monday. UNAMID official Ibrahim Gambari called the attack a "war crime" and urged Sudan's government to investigate.

According to the U.N., nearly 2 million people have been displaced by the war in Darfur.
