Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno has formally submitted his bid for a second term.
The leader of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party said Friday he will run again with Pedro Pierluisi, the island's nonvoting representative in Congress.
The duo faces gubernatorial candidate Alejandro Garcia Padilla with the Popular Democratic Party, who is running with his party president, Hector Ferrer. Their party favors the U.S. territory's current commonwealth status.
Fortuno has been criticized for the island's near-record number of killings, an unemployment rate higher than any U.S. state and the dismissal of thousands of government workers in a bid to reduce a $3.3 billion deficit. He says he will continue to fight those problems.
