Government shelling kills 7 in southern Yemen

A Yemeni medical official says pro-government forces have fired mortar shells in a southern city after two days of clashes there with armed tribesmen, killing seven people and seriously injuring 10.

The tribesmen have supported anti-government protesters seeking President Ali Abdullah Saleh's ouster after 33 years in power.

Clashes between the tribesmen and the security forces have raged for weeks in the city of Taiz, which has become a hotbed of protests since protests first began in February.
