A Ugandan official says a court has ordered that the former vice president be held in jail ahead of his trial on corruption charges.
Judiciary spokesman Erias Kisawuzi says Gilbert Bukenya was taken Monday to Luzira prison on the outskirts of Kampala. His trial date has not yet been set.
Bukenya is accused of fraudulently awarding a $2 million contract in 2007. He has denied the allegations.
Bukenya became vice president in 2003. President Yoweri Museveni removed him in May. He is the highest-ranking official to face such charges.
Museveni, who seized power in the East African nation in 1986 and is now in his 26th year in office, has vowed to fight corruption.
