Landmark Tunisian election campaign kicks off

The campaign for Tunisia's landmark elections for a constitutional assembly has begun, involving 81 political parties in this former dictatorship.

Tunisia overthrew its long ruling leader President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January after a month-long popular uprising that inspired similar movements across the region and has remade the face of the Arab world.

Nine months filled with new demonstrations, unrest and uncertainty have culiminated in the beginning of the campaign Saturday for elections on Oct. 23.

Of the 111 parties registered, 81 will be competing in 1,541 lists across 33 constituencies, including six based abroad.

Polls say that half of the country's 7 million strong electorate remain undecided.
