A South Korean official says China has expelled a group of South Korean journalists and researchers it detained last week near the border with North Korea.
A South Korean Foreign Ministry official said Thursday that three JoongAng Ilbo daily reporters and two researchers returned home Sunday after being released a day earlier.
The official declined to be named because the release was not publicly announced. JoongAng Ilbo spokesman Cheong Chul-gun confirmed the information.
Unnamed South Korean officials have said Chinese authorities held the South Koreans at a hotel for four days after finding them traveling on tourist visas near the border with North Korea.
China has previously expelled or jailed foreign reporters working without journalist visas.
