WWII remains of American repatriated from Bosnia

Almost seven decades after he died in World War II, the remains of Staff Sgt. Meceslaus T. Miaskiewicz are being returned from Bosnia to relatives in Massachusetts.

Wrapped in a U.S. flag, his coffin was loaded Tuesday at the Sarajevo airport onto a U.S. C-130.

Miaskiewicz was with the 347th Bomb Squadron.

His remains were thought to have been collected along with those of seven other crew members of a B-17 that crashed in 1944 while returning to Italy from a mission in Romania.

But residents of a village near Ljubuski pointed out his unmarked grave to forensic experts searching for the dead from Bosnia's 1992-95 war. They notified the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo, Ambassador Patrick Moon said.

DNA analysis identified Miaskiewicz's remains.
