A parliamentary member says 19 people died when a truck crashed while carrying goods and people.
Triphon Kinkey Mulumba said Sunday the crash was caused by overloading and a poor breaking system. He said 9 people died at the scene and 10 died while at the hospital. Mulumba said several others were injured, but it was unknown how many people were riding in the truck when it crashed nearly 112 miles (180 kilometers) outside the capital.
Mulumba said the truck was traveling east from Kinshasa to Lukanda.
Congo is a vast country the size of Western Europe, but has only several hundred miles of paved road. Many of those roads are in poor repair, as are the overloaded vehicles that frequently traverse them.
