The U.S. military says an American soldier has died in a non-hostile incident in central Iraq.
In a statement Friday, the military said the service member died Thursday.
No further details were immediately available, and the name of the soldier was being withheld pending notification of the family.
The death brings to 4,477 the number of American troops who have died supporting military operations in Iraq since the 2003 invasion. That's according to an Associated Press count.
U.S. troops are scheduled to leave Iraq at the end of the year as required by a security agreement between Baghdad and Washington.
Leaders in both nations are weighing whether up to 10,000 U.S. forces should stay because of continued instability in Iraq.
