Poland's jobless rate down to 11.6 pct in August

Government statistics show that Poland's jobless rate inched down to 11.6 percent in August from 11.7 the previous month.

The Central Statistical Office said Friday that 1.85 million people in the country of 38 million were registered as jobless at the end of August. It was almost 8,000 fewer unemployed compared to July but more than 55,000 fewer than in August 2010.

The drop in the jobless rate was due to seasonal jobs in agriculture, construction, tourism and forestry, as well as from buoyant economic growth. Poland's economy is growing at about 4 percent this year, though it is expected to slow to about 3 percent growth next year due to the economic turmoil in Europe.
