Guatemala judge reschedules ex-general's hearing

A Guatemalan judge has rescheduled a hearing to decide if a former army general will stand trial for his alleged involvement in dozens of massacres of indigenous people during the Central American nation's civil war.

Judge Carol Flores says she pushed back the hearing to Oct. 3 because former Gen. Hector Mario Lopez Fuentes was too sick to attend a court session that had been set for Wednesday.

Flores says she has ordered Lopez to undergo medical exams this week and submit a report on his health.

Lopez was detained in Guatemala City in June on charges that he planned and ordered about 300 massacres when he was chief of staff of the Guatemalan military between 1982 and 1983.
