A court has sentenced a fugitive Colombian paramilitary warlord to 40 years in prison for the 2003 murder of a leftist mayor who had publicly reported death threats against him to the president.
Rodrigo Mercado was convicted in absentia of kidnapping and killing of Edualdo Diaz, mayor of the Sucre state town of El Roble. Prosecutors announced the conviction Monday.
Former Sucre Gov. Salvador Arana was convicted in 2009 of masterminding the murder. He is serving a 40-year prison term. Uribe had named Arana ambassador to Chile in 2005.
Diaz was killed after denouncing collusion between Sucre politicians and paramilitaries responsible for killings and extensive land theft. He told Uribe he had received death threats.
