India's ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi has returned home after traveling overseas for surgery for an undisclosed ailment.
Congress spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi says Gandhi returned to New Delhi early Thursday and was fine. He gave no other details.
Gandhi was operated upon in early August. The party gave no details of her illness or the location of the hospital. News reports have said the operation took place in the U.S.
Gandhi is the 64-year-old widow of slain former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. She is widely viewed as the most powerful person in India, setting government strategy and doling out Cabinet posts.
She took over the Congress party in 1998 and declined the premiership despite leading the party to victory in 2004 elections.
