2-day strike shuts down Indian-held Kashmir

A two-day general strike demanding the release of hundreds of street protesters in the Indian-ruled portion of Kashmir has shut down most businesses and schools in the disputed region.

Tuesday's strike was called by top separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. He is seeking the release of nearly 250 people arrested for allegedly throwing rocks at government forces during anti-India protests.

Police say only about 100 people are in custody.

The region is split between India and Pakistan but is claimed by both.

Rebel groups in the Indian-ruled portion have been fighting since 1989 for independence or merger with Pakistan.
