A Congolese prison official says that two Norwegians who have been condemned to death were caught attempting to escape via a tunnel they had dug on the prison grounds.
Prison chaplain David Mbembi said by telephone from the prison in Kisangani Friday that the two were caught by another prisoner Wednesday night who reported them to authorities. The hole that Tjostolv Moland and Joshua French had dug would have taken them out of the prison via the prison's pharmacy.
In 2010, a Kisangani court convicted Moland and French, who is also a British citizen, of espionage and the 2009 murder of a local driver. They have written to Congolese President Joseph Kabila requesting a pardon.
There have been no executions in Congo since Kabila came to power in 2001.
