Appeals court clears Thaksin's ex-wife in tax case

An appeals court has cleared the ex-wife of Thailand's deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a three-year-old tax evasion case.

The Bangkok Appeals Court overturned Potjaman Na Pombejra's 2008 conviction and three-year jail sentence for evading tax payments. The court Wednesday also cleared her secretary Kanchanapa Honghern who had been sentenced to two years on the same charge.

The case involved a 2007 share transfer deal to Potjaman's adopted brother Bannapot Damapong worth 546 million baht ($18 million).

The court upheld Bannapot's guilty verdict for not paying tax on his earnings from the share acquisition. But it reduced his sentence from three years in jail to two years' suspended.

All three had been out on bail pending the appeal.
